Bhagwati Mandir

Bhagwati Mandir, Bathinda is located at a place named Maiser Khana which is situated at a distance of around 30 km from Bathinda on the Bathinda-Mansa road. This temple can be reached conveniently by road and is an important place of pilgrimage for Hindu community.

Its history dates back to the 17th century A.D. when Kamala Bhagt, a resident of this place set off for Jawala Mukhi temple in Kangra, another important Hindu shrine. He was accompanied by a saint named Kali Nath. Before they could reach their destination, the goddess Jawala Mukhi appeared and blessed them. As per the folklore, the deity blessed them that their village, Maiser Khana, will be treated as her abode and people will go there to worship her.

A large temple, having a dome of around 80 ft was built at this place. This temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year and a couple of fairs are organized here annually. The pond located along the shrine is considered to be sacred and it is believed that whosoever takes a bath in this pond attains salvation.

This temple had been decaying due to inaction of the government, so the devotees approached the Mahavir Dal, a Hindu organization aimed at uplifting of Hindu religion. A number of saints and other important personalities came forward and started renovation work of the temple. Large amount of funds were collected for the temple and some of the best architects were hired for this purpose.

These days, the temple houses a Sanskrit school as well, where Sanskrit language is taught and attempts are made to preserve Indian culture. Outsiders can avail the hostel facility that is provided by the shrine board.
