Goindwal Sahib,is an important historic and religious place for Sikhs, is located at a distance of around 30 km south-west from Amritsar. It is connected with holy city Amritsar by road and rail and can be reached easily from there. It is situated on the banks of river Beas and is the birth place of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, fifth guru of the Sikhs.

Goindwal Sahib is a major place of worship for the Sikh religion and the town is home to few of the most important Gurudwaras for the religion. The town was established by Guru Sri Amar Das, third guru of the Sikhs. Guru Sri Amar Das constructed baoli or a stepwell which led to water level. An annual fair was organized here at the time of Baisakhi.

The importance of Goindwal Sahib can be gauged from the fact that a number of notable locations of historical and religious significance are located here. Few of such locations include Sri Baoli Sahib, Thara Sahib Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, Gurudwara Sri Chubara Sahib Ji, Khuh Guru Ram Das Ji and Gurudwara Damdama Sahib, which is located at a distance of around 3 km from here.

Sri Baoli Sahib, the well that was constructed by Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, has a diameter of around 8 feet. One can reach the bottom by descending through 84 steps, a figure refelcting the belief that every soul has to born 8.4 million times before attaining salvation or mokhsa.

Thousands of tourists pay a visit to this place every year. It is to be noted that those visiting this place comprise of people from all faiths, including the Sikhs. Most people who visit the Golden Temple, Amritsar invariably pay a visit here.
